I was about one hour into my first deer season with a buck tag. I got out of my truck and slowly made my way out on a narrow ridge in the badlands. I noticed a cool looking "cannon ball" rock at the bottom of the ravine to my left. I turned back for a second look because the rock was so unique. I looked at the rock through my binocs and all of a sudden I realized it was a deer bedded down! I strai...ned my eyes to look through the branches of a tiny juniper tree to see try and see the head. My heart started to pound as I spotted his antlers and started to count, 1, 2, 3, 4 points on at least one side. I made the decision that i was going to try to take this deer. He was laying so still that I thought he was sleeping so I began to get into position to make a shot. As I put my gun on the edge of the ridge and got down in the prone position I saw his big black eye peering at me through the tree. My heart started pounding even harder because I thought he was going to bolt at any second. I found him in the scope, put the cross hairs a little lower than where I wanted to hit him because it was such a close shot. He still hadn't budged an inch so I exhaled and squeezed the trigger... BOOM! He never got up again. He is a deer that most people would pass up on opening day, but being this was my first chance ever to shoot a buck with a gun I didn't hesitate to fire. I tried to drag him out of the bottoms but ended up having to chop him into quarters and take him out in pieces.

Jerry Defoe is the owner of "North Dakota Adventures." One day Jerry came up to me and told me that I absolutely had to learn how to shoot a bow. He set me up with all of his own equipment and started teaching me how to shoot in January of 2009. Then once hunting season came he set me up in one of his ten stands and told me to wait for a big buck. This nice 4x4 Mule deer came in chasing this doe and I immediately knew he was the one that I wanted for my first bow kill. I did all the filming myself with a tripod and edited the footage on my iMac. This was the best hunt of my life! Jerry succeeded in his goal of getting me hooked on bow hunting. I have a nice set of antlers on my wall and some great venison in my freezer. This a great Muledeer that good friend Mark Meyer took with his bow. The deer scored in the 180s. We were heading out after a six day spot and stalk hunt and this deer was here, and mark takes a shot. He was the number 4 typical in the state of North Dakota for a while but I'm sure that it has changed. just a great hunt in the last two hours of hunting.
